Have you ever wanted to go to a different county to study somewhere? The AFS program  gives young students all over the world an opportunity to study abroad. This program started about 70 years ago by ambulance drivers during WWII. In the first year of the program, 11 young people participated. Now, there are about 2,300 teens.   The program is open to 60 countries.

You must be 15 or older to be part of this program. Parents are not allowed to visit their children while they are away. They believe that the kids should have the experience without parents being part of it so you need to mature and independent about being away from home.  The price of this program ranges drastically;  It ranges anywhere from $9,000 – $13,000. The cost includes airfare, all training, orientation, and health insurance.  Now, you may be wondering, “Do I have to know a certain language to go where I want to?” The answer is no. You do not have to. But, there are some exceptions. If students are coming from different countries to America, then yes, they have to take a test.  If you have any medical conditions, it is recommended to bring at least a year’s supply of what you need.

There are many rules, of course. They include no driving, no abusing an illegal substance, and no hitchhiking. Kids are responsible for their spending money.

This program is very educational and is a great experience for all.  You can transfer many of the credits overseas to credits here at school.  For more information on this program, you can go to: http://www.afsusa.org/  or talk to Mrs.Doyle at M.R.H.S.  Studying abroad for either a summer, a semester, or a full year will be a life-enriching experience.
