Thanksgiving is a special time to gather with loved ones, give thanks, and most importantly, set diets aside. Turkey is the main staple in every Thanksgiving feast. With the holidays rapidly approaching, people need to decide what kind of turkey they will be eating on Thanksgiving day.

Forty-six million turkeys are killed each year for Thanksgiving; many turkey farms are preparing their turkeys respectfully. For the well-known turkey providers at Butterball, this is not the case. Video evidence taken recently by undercover activists shows workers at Butterball physically, sexually and mentally abusing their turkeys. The birds are so severely abused, they show visible signs of open wounds and broken bones. Baby turkeys are being ground up alive and toes and beaks are cut off without the proper use of painkillers.

The birds are born at Butterball with a lack of the natural, majestic qualities of a wild turkey. They are bred to grow unnaturally large and at excessive rates. They suffer from deformities and are later kicked, dragged, and stomped on by the inhumane workers in their factories. Even worse, some workers brag about the abuse they have put upon the turkeys and take pride in their cruelty.

This isn’t the first time Butterball was accused of animal cruelty. In 2011 Butterball underwent an undercover investigation by the nonprofit, Mercy for Animals. Two workers were convicted of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty. The following year, five now-former employees were convicted of the same crimes.

As if the incessant torture of the turkeys at Butterball isn’t enough, Butterball even created a petition to create a turkey emoji, but not as the bird itself. The workers of Butterball feel the need to exploit the picture of a dead turkey throughout electronic messages.

This Thanksgiving, when it comes time to make the decision of where you get your turkey, make sure your meal doesn’t consist of a bird who had to undergo unthinkable abuse to make its way to your plate.
