On Saturday, October 6, President Trump’s Supreme Court Justice nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, was confirmed into the Supreme Court. During Kavanaugh’s nomination, he was accused of sexually assaulting women during his high school and college years. The first to come forward was Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Ford testified during Kavanaugh’s hearing.

When I asked students at MRHS for their opinions on this very controversial nomination, I got very differing results. During my hunt for the school’s thoughts, I talked to my fellow 8th Grade student, Courteney Dery ,and 8th Grade Civics teacher Mr. Dickson.

Courteney Dery is an 8th-grade student at MRHS who thinks that Kavanaugh seems like a very good judge. She feels that he is fit for the position, and she was happy to see him become a Supreme Court Justice. On the other hand, MRHS Civics teacher Mr. Dickson felt that he is unfit for the position that was bestowed upon him.

Since this supposed event happened during Kavanaugh’s high school years, I asked both of my interviewees if they feel that a person’s actions as teenagers affect our lives as adults. Both Courteney Dery and Mr. Dickson felt adamant that your actions do affect your life going forward. They both said that the actions we make set the base for our future; we should think of high school as the foundation for your adult life.

When Christine Blasey Ford testified against Kavanaugh, she stated that he was drunk during the attack. “If you are under the influence, the chemicals in your system are calling the shots,” this was Courteney Dery’s response to whether your actions while you’re intoxicated are similar to actions you could make when you are sober. While Dery’s response was 100% against the idea, Mr. Dickson felt that it could be possible, but he would have to know more about the topic to give a definitive answer.

Do you feel that Brett Kavanaugh is fit for his job as Supreme Court Justice or do you feel that his past may have come back to haunt him in the future? Our school is divided on this and so is our nation.
